It was early on in their relationship. Now, it’s not what you think. You see, they had only known each other for one week. That’s right – only seven days. Just two days ago, they had actually started dating. They had only been dating for two days, and they had already said, “I love you.” It was moving fast.
So Abby decided it was finally time – time to meet the rest of the friend group! This week, the group chose to go rollerskating on a group date. Now, we need to give you some context for this little situation.
Abby spent ten years doing competitive gymnastics. Not just a kid’s tumbling class. No, this was four days a week, three hours at a time, of grueling body conditioning and monotonous routine repetition on the vault, floor, balance beam, and uneven bars. Gymnastics requires balance, grace, elegance, and strength much like a ballerina. You would think Abby would be quick on her feet and that rollerskating would be a breeze. You would be wrong. Abby has been a clutz her entire life, even while she was in gymnastics. Now, she has been out of practice for about five years. The upcoming performance would be the true test of Calvin’s character.
Now, back to the story.
Everyone says the same thing: “you can’t be that bad,” or “everything will be fine!” Whenever someone says that to Abby, it does not end well. It was both a catastrophe and a success. Abby fell more times than you could count. But Calvin never left her side. He held her hand, helped her get drinks, and find seats. He was a true gentleman. But this isn’t the dancing we mentioned.
If you’ve ever been to a rollerskating rink, then you know that there’s a variety of activities they have planned. Sure, there’s always time for freestyle when people can just roll around the rink, but it’s still more fun when there are other things to do. Some of these things include races and dancing.
The rink started with a race, but they quickly changed gears and went with group dancing. With his dreamy eyes and flirtatious smile, Calvin somehow convinced Abby to go out to the dance floor. Did anyone else accompany her from the group? Did Abby dance? Well… few people would call it dancing. Abby performed the hokie pokie on rollerskates. Yes, you read that correctly. Abby performed the hokie pokie… on rollerskates.
It really was a blast. And it was definitely an experience they would never forget. And that’s the story of how Calvin convinced Abby to dance for him.
